How to apply for the Physics Graduate Programs

Step 1

Please apply to UTEP’s Graduate School on-line using the following link:

Step 2

In order to expedite the processing of your application; please make sure to include the following materials in your online application:

  • Photocopies of your original college/university transcripts.
  • A photocopy of your BS in Physics degree. Physics is the required degree by default, but other degrees may be accepted, depending on the number of physics and math courses taken. In those cases, the student will likely be required to take undergraduate courses.
  • Your personal statement, approximately one page long, that should address the following questions:

1.      What is your interest in physics or in a particular area of physics?

2.      Why are you interested in joining the graduate program in physics at UTEP?

3.      What are your future career goals?

  • A photocopy of your TOEFL score if you are an International student. In order to qualify for admission and to receive a teaching assistantship your score must be a minimum of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 79 on the internet-based TOEFL, or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL.
  • Please arrange for two confidential letters of recommendation. Give your letter writers at least two weeks of time to prepare their letters. They can send the letters of recommendation either through the UTEP online system or email them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  • The GRE is not required for admission to the Master of Science programs in the Physics Department, but we recommend that you submit it if you need a TA. The GRE score can help to decide who will receive a TAship, assuming other qualifications are the same.

Note: You may attach unofficial copies of the required materials to ensure your application is processed, but be advised that your final admission in the program will depend upon the Graduate School receiving official copies of your transcripts, degree certificate, and TOEFL score.

Step 3

If you have any questions send an email to the Graduate Advisor for the program you applied. The physics advisors are:

Dr. Vivian Incera
Graduate Advisor for the MS in Physics
