The Environmental Physics & Atmospheric Sciences Research Group
headed by Dr. Rosa Fitzgerald

We perform modeling of atmospheric processes, using first principles, mathematical formulation and numerical calculations, to contribute towards a better understanding of atmospheric phenomena, Global warming, air pollution, etc. In addition, we monitor and collect scientific data for analysis and model validation. Some of our projects involve bi-national air quality studies to help improve the quality of life for the Paso del Norte Region.

We are part of a consortium of Universities, NCAS (NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences). The following Universities are part of the Consortium: Howard University, The University of Texas at El Paso, Jackson State University, State University of N.Y at Albany, University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, University of Maryland.

Outreach: Every summer, a Weather Camp is hosted at UTEP for the duration of a week. This camp is funded and affiliated to NCAS, under The Channeling Atmospheric Research into Educational Experiences Reaching Students program (CAREERS). Our goals are:

  • Seek to increase access to science for HighSchool students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

  • Plan to achieve this by engaging students in discussions, lectures and interactive projects to gain a better understanding of atmospheric science disciplines (i.e. weather forecasting, environmental modeling, atmospheric data acquisition).

  • Aspire to guide talented students towards higher education, to pursue careers in atmospheric science primarily, or toward other STEM field professions.
