Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences.

The Department of Biological Sciences, among the most active departments at UTEP, contributes to interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Science, Environmental Science and Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Science, and Forensic Science. The 35 full-time faculty members have annual external research expenditures of $10 million funded primarily through NIH (R01, R15, SCORE), NSF, and other sources. The Department is housed in a state-of-the-art 102,000 sq ft. Bioscience Research building connected to a 73,800 sq ft. Biology building. Several large programmatic grants (RCMI BBRC, CREST, BOEM) fund core facilities with capacities for Biomolecule Analysis, Cytometry, Screening and Imaging, Genomic Analysis, Bioinformatics, and Biostatistics. Other resources include: a BSL-3 laboratory, a vivarium, a herbarium, a green roof, a greenhouse, and access to advanced computing and geospatial facilities. The department also manages UTEP’s 38,000-acre Indio Mountains Research Station. The department offers BA, BS, MS and two doctoral degrees (Pathobiology; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) with 46 doctoral students and 22 master’s students. Existing faculty expertise includes biomedical, ecological, evolutionary, and educational research fields. UTEP’s commitment to student training is funded in part by NSF (GK-12, REU, URM, UPBiT, LSAMP) and NIH (RISE, MARC).

We invite you to join our team of researchers and educators using state of the art technologies to study emerging issues in evolutionary biology and ecological and human health.
